[NEWBIE] Learn from My Experience. Try Your 1st Guitar in Person Before You Buy Online
TLDR at Bottom Background: Longtime reader, first time poster. I am a 40 something that failed learning guitar from a cheap Strat copy when young. Decided to take guitar up agin late spring 2020 during Covid lockdown. I was limited to places I could order from (open). So, I could not tryout guitars in person. Left with just going off reviews of gear or from what artists I listen to play. I decided to concentrate on places close to me in case there were problems with the guitar. Also, went with a place that said they did a full setup before sale, which was important to me from my research. The place I settled on was 45 minutes away. The Gear: The first guitar I went with was a Squire Classic Vibe 70’s Custom telecaster. This was a demo model sold at a discount. It arrived with fret buzz on the low E and it appeared the brass saddles were out of whack with the whole bridge rattling. I contacted the guitar shop and sent them videos. They tried have me do adjustments over the phone. No luck in improving. The suggested sending the guitar back. I didn’t want to wait 7-10 days to receive it back. I felt like I was losing time (The irony once you read the rest of the story). They offered to return and exchange for another guitar if I brought it in person. Doing the exchange outside. I jumped on it. As I didn’t want to wait and the telecaster didn’t feel comfortable to hold or play. The guitar I exchanged it with what was available was an Epiphone Les Paul Muse. This again was a demonstration unit. I drove did the exchange. I got it home and to my disappointment there was fret buzz on Low E, A and D strings. Also, this guitar even felt more uncomfortable to play. I kept feeling like I was slouching down around the guitar to play, I’m 6’ 3”. I contacted the guitar shop again and they offered to fix or exchange. I took the exchange option again to save time and it was uncomfortable. With stock they had I settled on a Gretsch 5222. Drove and did the exchange again. This was a demonstration unit as well. This guitar was definitely the best out if the 3 comfortability wise. Sound, Fit and finish was the best too. One thing I struggled with was the thin-u neck. I found that doing chords I could never get my thumb comfortable as it was so thin by the headstock. Later, learning songs I found the bridge rattling when I did power chords and such 10 fret or higher. Sounded terrible. Turned up my amp high to try to cover the noise. I decided to change the strings (wanted to try to go down to 9’s to see if it would make easier to play) and do a beginner setup to see that would help with the help of the internets. No improvement. There are few videos and many forum posts about Gretsch bridges rattling. That is what I would hear. So, I decided to try to get this fixed under warranty going through and approved Gretsch dealer right near my house. I took the Gretsch 5222 do the guitar shop in the dealer network. The person I checked the guitar in with said he felt it was just fret buzz ant the guitar would just need a setup. At this point I’m so frustrated with the sound of the guitar I left it for the full setup for $50. The guitar was finished a week later. I arrived to pick it up and I kid you not, there was still rattle or fret buzz according to them. Although, it was slightly better. They suggested to take it home and try it out through my own amp. If there were still issues bring it back. Well, got it home and I could hear the sounds coming through the amp with headphones even. I brought it back. They worked on the guitar for an hour while I there. They couldn’t get it to stop. They did the old “That is the way it is”, “This is Gretsch’s low line”. The last ditch effort was to move back to a set of factory 10’s. This cleared rattle/buzzing on the E. I still felt like I could hear the A and D string. It was loud in there, hard to tell. I got it home. Through the 2-week holiday stretch and was disappointed that the unwanted sound was still there. I made the decision to investigate if I could trade it in. I didn’t want to be without a guitar for a week or more. Plus, I never felt good with the 5222. Still felt I was slouching over to play sometimes and the neck being so slim up top. I decided to mostly target larger semi-hallow and hollow guitars. Thought they would be better for me being taller. Researched as much as I could and targeted the usual value picks of Epiphone (335, Coupe, Sherition, 339, Casino, Rivera), Ibenez 73, D’ Angelico DC, etc. I thought the Casino was going to be my favorite. Went to Guitar Center first. Had a good selection to look at. Setups were all terrible. One was the worst I ever seen; the frets were like knives. Nothing spoke to me. A D’ Angelico DC was probably the best built there. Still felt small, but better than my 5222. It was hard to flag someone to even get a ladder for me. Couldn’t find anyone to estimate my trade. Decided to bail. There was the original well-known guitar shop I would have gone to way back at the beginning of my Journey if lock down did not happen. I got there and the staff was super helpful and knowledgeable. Totally listened to my situation. They assessed my 5222 and gave me space to look, like I should have done at the beginning. I just went around looked and held all the models. I held Semi-hallows, offsets, telecasters. Didn’t plug them in. Just felt them in my lap and hands. Played difficult chords. Listed to them resonate. It came down to 2 guitars. An Epiphone 335 Figured Blueberry figured and an Ibanez AS73FM Green Valley Gradiation. There was a clear winner side by side by holding them and plugged in. The Ibenez 73 Flamed Maple Green Valley Gradiation was the guitar for me. The shop offered me $120 less than I paid for my 5222 and I took it without thinking twice. My fingers just fit the Ibanez. The thicker neck feels great. It doesn’t make chords harder for me, it makes it easier. The guitar felt like it fit me. The sustain is fantastic, I can play unplugged. The fit and finish was good. Flamed top looks really cool and I never would have pictured me with a guitar like this. Is the tone the best in the world? No. But, I think they are averagely versatile from what I read, heard and seen. I honestly have to let the tone go. I’m such a beginner I don’t know what good tone is yet. I’m just looking for something I want to pickup all the time, makes it easier for to play and therefore learn. I will upgrade later or may be never. I may always love it. TL/DR To beginners similar myself. Don’t just go off reviews/videos and order online. Try out guitars in person first. There is plenty of advice like this that I wished I would have taken from the beginning. The guitar should feel good in your hands, lap, standing, or however you play. I have progressed more in the last 2 weeks than I have in the last 3 months with the right guitar. I really attribute this to the ease of play. I’m not fighting the guitar as much. Going in person will open your eyes to new possibilities you may not have pictured in your head. Plus, you may find issues with the guitar before you purchase. Hope this helps someone.
So, I recently got myself a job and I want to buy a guitar since the one I have is getting old for me and I thought a new one would be a lot more better. But anyway, I got the idea to find a guitar online to buy. And first I wanted a Epiphone casino but that cost too much money so I saved that for another time. So I decided to settle with a Fender Mustang or Jaguar, I like the look and on reviews they sound cool. So I went on every guitar app/website and I found some good ones, until I stumbled across Sweatse.com, which has guitars but for very cheap. I'm talking like 50 dollars for a Fender Jaguar. So I was hoping if anyone had some Intel on this website so I can either buy or stay away from it. But other than that I'm still looking for the right price and I found a couple so yeah. Anyways thank you.
[NEWBIE] i want to buy my first electric guitar and I can't decide which one to get.
I'm buying my first electric guitar, and I can't make up my mind which one to get. I like Fender guitars. My options are the Fender Player Series Stratocaster, Fender Offset Series Mustang and Duo-Sonic HS. I also like the look and comfort of hollow and semi-hollow guitars. The Gretsch G2622T Streamliner is also one of my options. I love the Epiphone Casino but Epiphone isn't sold in my country and it's too expensive to import it. So what are your thoughts of these guitars? Have you had any experience with them? They all have good reviews. Are there any problems with them? I'm leaning most on the Player Stratocaster because it has all the features of a normal Stratocaster. The Offset Mustang does't have a tremolo like most Mustang's for example, but I just love the olive colour. I am set on a amp. I will be getting a Fender Mustang GT 100. I know that it isn't the best but i like how it has a large selection of amp models and effects built in to it. So what are your thoughts on these guitars that I mentioned. I can't come to a decision.
I have been looking into low wattage tube amps, like the Vox AC4TV, but the reviews I've been reading seem to suggest that even 1/4 of a watt is a bit loud when cranked. I have a lot of neighbors with small kids and my spouse isn't always thrilled to hear constant wailing, so I'm looking for some quieter options. I am currently playing a casino and an epiphone strat clone. I do a lot of Hendrix, Beatles, and proto-punk/early punk stuff, although I mess around with classic rock and some newer stuff as well. I don't know much about the differences between amps. I know that I don't really want an amp with effects because I like using pedals (although I'm open to the idea of amps that can model other amps). So basically, if cranking a low-watt tube amp will still be too loud, where should I go for a good sound at a low volume? (P.S. I won't be gigging, at least not for the foreseeable future. I just play in my home office to relax).
I mainly play an Epiphone Casino, along with my Gibson SG Custom and B-25-12, but I’ve become really interested in early jazz guitar (Freddie Green style big band comping) and Western swing and want to incorporate those sounds into my music. What’s important is that the instrument can be played without any amplification, if it has a pickup it has to be the sort that’s mounted on top and not screwed right into the guitar, because once holes are drilled into a guitar most of it’s power to project and sound nice acoustically is lost. It seems that there are only three guitars in production that meet this description, the Godin 5th Avenue, the Gretsch G9550 New Yorker and the Epiphone Masterbilt Olympic so I’m considering those along with older Kay, Harmony and Silvertone instruments. As acoustic archtops are a niche within the already small niche of jazz guitar I have not been able to find reviews of any of the new instruments, or much information at all from sources other than the companies making them. I’d appreciate your insights.
I recently got an Epiphone Casino that is dated August, 2016. I was wondering if anybody has any specs on these? I saw that the new Casinos have the P90 pro pickups, when were these introduced? Also does anyone know anything about the electronics in these? My guitar sounds and plays great, I just want so more details on it. I’ve also send mixed reviews going both ways regarding Chinese vs Korean ones. What are the differences in Casinos over the years?
https://www.instagram.com/p/BZpuUoIF6_c/ Recently purchased this... What is it? Ibanez Artcore AS73… TCR-12-03 Where'd I get it & what'd I pay? Local auction site. Pick up was about 160km away. $500nzd (about $360ish USD) Reason I bought it? I've been playing on and off for the last 25 years but have only ever had solid body electric guitars. I played my brother's Epiphone Wildkat a few years ago and really like the sound. Since then I've been occasionally watching the local auctions for a semi hollow body guitars. I was looking for the Epiphone Casino, and saw the Ibanez happened to be on there as well. I didn't know much about it so I decided to read some reviews and they were favourable on comparrison. What do you like about it? I've mainly only owned Strats in the past and like the humbuckers. It plays nice, I like the colour and I like the sound, both clean and dirty. What are you going to do with it? I've already changed out the capacitors in it it's meant to have .22s and when I opened it it had .33 (yeah, cool capacitor story bro) so I put some Sprague 22. I may at some stage, change the pickups as well. How versitile is it? You can get nice clean, country, Blues, rock, softish metal and jazz out of it. What else? It's got a Mahogany neck and a maple body which is a little bit different, but I like the clear red finish with the maple grain for the body. Edit: Pick up set up story: When I picked it up that guy that I bought it from said that he had not played it for a couple of years, strings were manky as (like, please don't catch something I from this). First thing I did when I got it home was take the old strings off, polish the frets as they were rusty and oil/condition the fretboard. I restrung it which 10-52 diadarios
Wine red looks with golden Hardware and a "Licensed" Bigsby, I will review my experience with what has been my most expensive guitar so far! The Epiphone Riviera Custom P93: ->Right out the box I bought mine from Amazon, (I know.) Amazon and musical instruments especially handled by FedEx is best described by Ace Ventura. Had to get it to my luthier, fret buzz and truss rod adjustment but it's winter here in Canada so I won't be too shabby about it. ->Looks and design Anytime I pull out my 12" of Fretboard Radius and Big fat Red Wine hollow body with what can be described as Gold Plated Ornament, the only reaction you can expect is an honest wow. And yeah, that Bigsby is there to compliment the guitar but it's what makes the Riviera a jewel amongst others! Maple body with the usual Mohagony neck. Tune-o-Matic bridge, always a preference! For me at least. ->Playability After a week of owning it, it's my only child now, it used to be my Fender but when I look at it now it looks too simple, Epiphone turned me in a man of tastes and will now make me spend more money on a better guitar only if it looks good. The fretboard is smooth as a babies butt, maybe the Frets are too high but it's to be considered later on if you're not comfortable with high frets, easy shave. This hollow body isn't Arched so the sound isn't specific, I can play jazz, blues, country but I don't think about Heavy metal and Rock too much, my amp can remedy to that concern but I stick to what the guitar looks like. Weight is to be considered because at 8.8 lbs, that thing is heavy, stand and it will hurt. Sit but find that perfect weight dispersion and you're good to go. ->Features There are 3 P90s pickups and I enjoy playing with them and finding what suits me best every day and its smooth turns, you can turn off the middle pick up thought you can always put a switch instead of a nob! 4 nobs, one of which is the master. Pickups are really in the way some times, you will scratch them a little or if you're fingerstyle jazz, you will hit them time to times! ->Verdict I'm having honest fun with it, it's my only guitar at the moment, the other will take the time to learn how to sound good and I'll maybe reconsider them. If I could I'd price up my choice but for what it can offer It's in my top 3 guitars that I've played in my life, honest recommendation and hours of fun with all the features it offers! And anytime I play and close my eyes, I'm in a casino and I play a funky jazz line while Bobby and Jack fight over Jessica. Thanks for reading! Have a nice one!
Hi there, I'm about to purchase my first electric guitar (I do own an acoustic one and can play it at a quite basic level), and I'm thorn between a couple options: The first one is the SX GG5 Semi-Acoustic Hollow Body (230 euros) . I've always wanted a semi acoustic guitar as I grew up listening to Tim Armstrong rocking his. This one comes into black or cherry and both are beautiful. The second one is a Epiphone SG-310 (250 euros). I do like the sg style as well, specially in full black as the one I'm looking at, but not as much as the semi hollows. Now, as far as I can see in the reviews, people say that the epiphones are made with much higher quality parts in general. So, besides preferring the looks of the SX, would the SG be a better buy? As in a guitar I will have less problems or "last" for longer in terms of when I'll feel the need to upgrade, and that feels nicer. I'd be playing mostly rock in general, punk, alternative, psychedelic, whatever I can get the grasp on the guitar! I'm kinda stuck into buying in local shops as I'm using a gift card thingy so I can't really go wider into options by shopping online. Also getting a semi hollow epiphone would put me a bit out of budget (casino is going for 400e which would be a bit of a stretch for a fun thing considering I'd also need an amp.) Sorry for the complete newbie question, and thanks in advance for any inputs on this! Cheers!
Hey guys, I recently stumbled upon a basically new Epiphone Elitist Casino body/neck stripped of all of it's hardware for a really dumb low price of $300. I've always wanted one of these so I snatched it up. Not my first rebuild, won't be my last I'm sure. The only part I am having difficulty deciding on/sourcing are the pickups. I have played both an Elitist and one of the LTD John Lennon 1965's and those Gibson USA P90's sounded very cool. I'm not looking for the most aggressive tone of all time, but I also want plenty of mid-range and umph (not necessarily vintage). I can't seem to find a source fo the Gibson USA P90's anywhere. Seems like what I want are the Lollar p90's. But read on... Due to the metric Japanese measurements plus the Epiphone/ES 330's unique cavity and top curvature, nobody seems to sell a direct aftermarket drop in. There is only one pickup set I've found that is drops-in by Kent Armstrong. I can't find a single video or review of them anywhere. Not outrageous price ($120), but too much for the risk imho. I'd never even heard of them until I started looking so I'm apprehensive. The pickups everyone raves about either the Seymore Duncan Antiquities ($230+ for a set) or the Lollar p90's that already have my attention ($230+ for a set). Surprisingly the GFS p90 pops up a lot as being pretty great, for only $70 for the set. p90's are easy and relatively cheap to adjust as you can swap magnets in seconds, so that GFS set is tempting as hell. However none of these are direct drop in replacements. They would require drilling new holes, or shims, or both. Which I am not totally against. As a final third option, several people offer rewinding services on p90's. I could grab a cheap ass set of the china Epiphone imports for $30 direct, and then pay somebody to rewind them properly. Lollar charges $230 for that, so it's basically the cost of a new set that I could then drop-in. I've found another indie guy that will do it for $90, to Lollar's specs. I just don't know if it's a good idea to start from such a crappy base. Anyone have any experience or guidance for me? Thank you! Edit* him to them
I can't find any comparison reviews. However, I've played the Epiphone Casino and loved it. Really lightweight and nice thin neck. I was wondering which one to go for though? Does the JLI still have the same specs just better hardware and materials used? Is it worth it?
Hi, I’m looking to upgrade from my Epiphone Dot. I don’t really have any issues with the guitar, but I’d like something similar that feels less “cheap.” It’s definitely a nice guitar for the price, but I’d like one with better overall quality and feel. I still want a semi-hollow or hollowbody and prefer Epiphone so i’ve been looking at the Casino and Sheraton. My main question is if either of those Epiphones are much of an upgrade build-wise. The Sheraton is very similar and a couple hundred dollars more than the Dot, but is the quality better at all? I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews in that regard. Some seem to think it’s the same quality wise, but just has nicer cosmetics. I don’t want to waste my time and spend $200 more for fancier looking hardware, inlays, etc. What about the Casino? I know it’s not much, but is the quality any better for $200 more? The Elitist ’65 Casino is too expensive by the way. It’s not really possible to try the guitars in person due to location so I’d appreciate your opinions. Thanks for any help.
I don't like Epiphones but that's my problem. I'd like a Casino but not yet. Yesterday I saw a review of the Gary Clark blue Epi with Bigsby. I'm a fool for blue and it's a Casino. Epi has a customer site, so I emailed. Nope. Not with or without Bigsby. Casinos come lefty (1 model) but no Bigsby, no way. No custom work. Period. They're awfully sorry. [I added that line]
Hey guys! I'm 21, started playing guitar about 6 months ago, and I'm using my brother's old starter amp, an old Line 6 15W 1X8. What should I upgrade to?! I typically play music of the likes of The Beatles, Ween, KISS, The White Stripes, The Sheepdogs, Kings of Leon. Gear: Epiphone Casino in Natural. Friggin' sweet, I love it! Line 6 POD HD500X Multi-Effects Processor and Pedal. It was a really really good deal so I figured why not?! I was thinking about getting a Line 6 IV 320W 4X12 since the POD probably works best with a Line 6 but, I hear a lot of people diss them despite them having great reviews. Does /guitar have any suggestions for a cabinet or combo amp I should get!? Budget is $600.
i'm wanting to get a new semi-hollow near the end of the summer (when i have more money), and the i've narrowed my options to either the epiphone casino or the gretsch electromatic double cutaway. i'd rather get some reviews from redditors (you know, because i trust y'all) before i make a decision. do any of you have any experience with either of these guitars? thanks for your help!
I own two Strats, two Eastwood Stormbirds as well as a LP Goldtop. Epiphone's original semi-acoustic, the Casino has changed little over the years. The combination of the hollow body and twin P90 pickups deliver a warm yet bright sound that sparkles. Semi-acoustic guitars. John Lennon played almost exclusively on a Epiphone Casino semi-acoustic from about '65 with the Beatles. Originally, the guitar had a Sunburst finish when in 1967, during the course of the psychedelic fashion heyday, it was completely psyched out, only to be then freed from all colour only one year later. The Casino is one of Epiphone’s most beloved instruments and a rock ’n’ roll staple – after all, it was the guitar Paul McCartney used to track the iconic Taxman on the Beatles ’ Revolver. Now, Epiphone has introduced a trio of worn finishes – including Worn Olive Drab, Worn Ebony and Worn Blue Denim – for the fully hollow classic.
